After you have been approved for your training by the Apprenticeship Division, AESL, please complete a registration form and mail the form back to the Bonavista Campus so you can be set up for online access. Your instructor will contact you in advance of your start date. Please provide a telephone number for us to contact you, as well as an email address that you regularly use.
Trades courses are typically broken down into two components: theory and practical. In many college and university programs, theory has been delivered online and through correspondence for many years. However, teaching the practical aspect online has traditionally been a challenge. While many online simulations are now possible, apprentices continue to need exposure to practical skills training to expand their knowledge as they work toward journeyperson certification. Your training will be carried out in two phases; providing a good balance of theory and practical learning.
Phase One: 12 Weeks of Online Training (Dates TBD)
The initial phase of instruction will be more theory-oriented supplemented by some practical simulations and videos. Rather than having 30 hours of course work per week, which is typical of how blocks are normally taught, CNA is limiting content to 10 hours per week. This will enable you to continue working and have a more manageable amount of course work.
During the online phase of teaching, you will be given an orientation session to online learning. You will be assigned an instructor whose primary job is to make sure you are equipped to excel. Your instructor will have online lectures and notes prepared. S/He will conduct video conference seminars for individuals and groups, and will also be available to answer questions, either by phone, in an online classroom or by email. Students will be required to attend online videoconference sessions for 1-2 hours per week as scheduled by the instructor. Your instructor is here to support your success in every way possible.
Because of varied work schedules, we will try to make group sessions that work better for you. While participation in these is strongly encouraged, it may not be possible to participate in all of them, and that is okay. Your instructor will work with you to schedule time to help you not fall behind.
Phase Two: Two Weeks On-Campus (Dates TBD)
The second phase of your class call will be completed in person at Bonavista Campus. You will be given two weeks of practical, intensive learning to cover the training objectives that are not compatible with online delivery. You will also have the opportunity to reinforce the learning from the online portion and prepare for the upcoming course and block exams.
What if I run into computer issues?
We are not expecting students taking this program to be computer experts, however, some familiarity with computers and internet use will be very helpful.

Who do I contact if I have additional questions?
A Development Officer has been assigned to help you throughout the training program.
