Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is a process that allows a student to receive credit for informal learning. Informal learning refers to learning that has been acquired through life experiences (independent study, on the job training). Informal learning does not include courses obtained at another institution that are subject to the regular guidelines concerning exemptions and transfer of credit. The informal learning that the applicant is seeking to have recognized must be equivalent to the course material that is part of the learning objectives of a course or program that is taught at College of the North Atlantic.

Note: The PLAR assessment and evaluation will be completed within three weeks of the semester start date.

Assessing Prior Learning

All courses challenged using PLAR will require the submission of a Application form and a portfolio which includes, but is not limited to:

  • Covering letter requesting PLAR with rationale
  • Resume
  • Job description and supporting letter from employer if request is based upon work experience
  • Copies of certificates, transcripts, etc., if request is based upon Continuing Education

Students will also be required to complete an exam and/or assignments for the course(s) if they wish to obtain credit for prior learning. Credits awarded for PLAR will be recorded on the student transcript as an exemption or as a mark. If your PLAR assessment is unsuccessful, you must complete the course to receive credit.

Requirements to Access PLAR

  • You must be accepted into a college program.
  • You must be registered for the course you are challenging and the course must be offered in that applicable semester.
  • The applicant’s prior learning must have been informal.
  • There will be no charge for PLAR for students who are enrolled in a college program.

Deadline for PLAR Submission

PLAR applications for Office Administration, Business Administration and Web Development must be submitted to the Admissions office at the Office of Distributed Learning.
